Conti ransomware was busy in 2020. In May 2021, the FBI identified at least 16 Conti ransomware attacks targeting US healthcare and first responder networks as well as the Irish health service. Unfortunately, an increase in Conti ransomware attacks was also observed here in Taiwan. Fortunately, we were able to acquire samples of Conti ransomware and perform analyses.

The worldwide pandemic did not slow down malicious cyber activity; it fueled it. As early as February 2020, we began observing an increase in malicious activity. In April, one of the largest cyber attacks targeting Taiwan in 2020 was the targeted attack on the CPC Corporation — a state-owned petroleum, natural gas, and gasoline company and the largest gasoline supplier in Taiwan with roughly 25% of the gas stations on the island nation.

On 12 January 2021, Fox-IT & NCC Group published their detailed report, “Abusing Cloud Services to Fly Under the Radar”. The threat actor tracked in their report shared many similarities to the China-linked threat actor Chimera, whom CyCraft attributed to a year-long cyberattack targeting the Taiwan semiconductor industry just last year.
